A Clinical Study of Breast Cancer




Abstract
In this clinical study, we investigated 159 cases of breast cancer that had been treated from January 1987 to February 1995 in the department of General Surgery, College of Medicine, Hallym University.
@ES The result were as follows:
@EN 1) The most prevalent age group was the fifth decade(36.0%). All cases were female.
2) The most common sign and symptom was a painless palpable mass(69.8%).
3) Most patients visited the hospital within 6 months of onset(75.5%).
4) Most frequent tumor size was 2~5cm diameter in 101 cases(63.5%) and in 16.4% of cases, the size was more than 5cm in diameter.
5) The primary tumor was located on the left breast in 88 cases(55.3%), on the right breast in 71 cases(44.7%); and the most frequent site of tumor was the upper outer quardrant in 85 cases (53.5%).
6) The diagnostic methods was mammograpy(118 case), ultrasonogram(23 cases) fine needle aspiration cytology(72 cases), excisional biopsy (42 cases), galactogram (5 cases), and intra-operative frozen biopsy (71 cases).
7) The operations performed were as follows: Standard radical mastectomy in 24 cases(15.9%), modified radical mastectomy in 98 cases(64.9%), simple mastectomy with lymph node dissection in 7 cases(4.6%), lumpectomy with lymph node dissection in

cases(10.6%).
8) The most common pathologic type was infiltrating ductal carcinoma, 126 cases (79.2%).
9) Axillary lymph node metastasis was present in 53(35.1%).
10) The most common stage was II in 85 cases(53.5%) by TNM classification.
11) The most common metastatic site was bone, 28 cases(18.5%).
